The Death Valley extends from the East of California up to Nevada. It is located in the Mojave desert and several mountains. The highest mountain range is the Panamint Range with over 3300 meters.

The valley is one of the hottest and driest places of the world. In the sommer there are often over 50° degrees and almost no rain. Moreover, the Death Valley is also for tourists not easy to endure. Therefore it is very imporant to have always enough water with you. In addition to that, you should pay attention to the signs on site. The Valley got his name in 1849, when two big groups of gold diggers and travelers strayed in the Valley for weeks and saw no escape.

There are some special view points and attractions, for example the popular Zabriskie Point, from which you have a good view over the whole valley. Furthermore, its bizarre rock formations offer a special view.

From the Plateau Dante`s view in nearly 1700 meters height you can see the central area of the Death Valley, the Telescope Peak and the Badwater Basin, which is the lowest point of the USA. It is located 85,5 meters under the sea level and contains salt water. Another attraction is the Artist`s Palette, which is situated near the Black Mountains and encloses a grave break. It is famous for its multicolored rock formations. The colors are the result of the oxidation of several metals, which occur in the ground.

You can reach the national park from Los Angeles or San Diego by car through the Interstate 15 such as the Highways 395 and 120. When you came from San Francisco, you can reach the Death Valley preferably through the Highway 120, which lead through the Yosemite National Park, but this street is closed throughout winter.
